THE PEDIATRICS

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents from birth up to the age of 18. The aims of the study of Pediatrics are to reduce infant and child rate of deaths, control the spread of infectious disease, promote healthy lifestyles for long disease-free life and help ease the problems of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Pediatrician’s diagnose and treat several conditions among children including- injuries; infections; genetic and congenital conditions; cancers; organ diseases and dysfunctions.

Pediatrics is concerned not only about immediate management of the ill child but also long term effects on quality of life, disability, and survival. Pediatricians are involved with the prevention, early detection, and management of problems including - Low-sugar diet leads to significant improvement in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in boys; physical activity, sleep and too long on screens; developmental delays and disorders; behavioral problems; functional disabilities; social stresses; mental disorders including depression and anxiety disorders.

ALL ABOUT IT

In 2015, there were 216 deaths per 100,000 live births (a drop of 44% from 1990); however, in 2013, over 40% of all pregnant women were still not receiving early antenatal care. Target 3.3: By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases Incidence rate of tuberculosis have declined by 19% over the 16 year period from 2000 – 2016. But while progress is impressive, it is still not fast enough to close persistent gaps and drug-resistant TB is a continuing threat. Target 3.b: Support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries. In 2016, one in 10 children worldwide did not receive their first dose of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP1) vaccine; coverage with all three doses was 86%. Despite the global progress in reducing child mortality over the past few decades, an estimated 5.4 million children under age 5 died in 2017—roughly half of those deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. Mortality rates among older children and young adolescents (aged 5-14) also dropped by more than 50 percent since 1990, yet almost one million children died in this age group in 2017 alone. The global burden of child deaths is a call for urgent and concerted action to further improve the survival chances of the world’s children.
